Hello, new here but not new to pools.
I've had a perplexing thing happen. Here's the background: I replaced the Jandy PLC1400 salt cell with a less expensive aftermarket unit in January. It seems to work, but I get an error code saying that it is not reversing for some reason. Then last month, I had the pool re-marcited. The deck around the pool is travertine tiles and these had to be lifted in order to install a pair of water features and a set of new pool lights. Thus, the pavers were professionally lifted and reinstalled. The result of this was a much nicer pool and now all the pavers are very flat and meet up nicely, but they had to have fine sand spread on top to fill in the tiny gaps. We did our best to get the excess sand away from the pool, but invariably some made its way into the water.
Everything was great until this weekend. We have a Zodiac MX6 pool cleaner and it stopped working. Of course I was out of town on business. I thought it was probably plugged with debris and that was true but I had no idea it was....Sand. And this is the bizarre part: The sand was STUCK to the device! I had to literally scrape it off with my fingers. It was a thin coating that made it look like it came from the factory this way but it did not. The reason it quit working was because the ball bearings inside the device were filled with sand and I had to take the whole thing apart to get at them and unseize them with a pair of pliers. I figured the device was toast, but pressed onward anyway, thinking there might be a chance to save it. Low and behold, it is scurrying around the pool again so I managed to save it. But get this: The entire 30 foot hose is also covered with stuck on sand! And inside the weir box (skimmer) the plastic basket also has sand stuck to it and feels rough to the touch. The sand comes off with your fingernails but water flow is not enough to remove it. I have not looked at the filter yet since the pressure is right in the middle of the band denoting that it does not need to be cleaned.
Any ideas why this all happened? There is no sand except on the MX6, the hose, and the skimmer basket. Nothing else was affected, apparently. Thanx!
