I am trying to help my MIL with her pool, and noticed yesterday that her salt cell is suddenly leaking at the union (I'm not sure if that is what it is called....it is the spot where is screws on). I tried putting some lube on the o-ring and then we tried some plumbers tape, but it is still leaking (and when I say leaking, it is basically spraying due to pressure, not just drips). I thought to try and replace the o-ring next, but I'm not sure if that is the way to go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check to see if somehow the plumbing leading to and from the cell is out of line.... maybe something else was changed or was hit. Check for cracks on the fittings. Last, do the nuts turn on freely and only hand-tighten or is it possible it is cross threaded.... a picture might help.

I've used the following product on my unions for pump and filter - works great - available at big box stores. I like better than plumber's tape. But as suggested look for cracks as well.

hopefully this works, here is a video of the leaking.

ugh, it is supposed to be a video, but it isn't working for some frustrating reason. You can see the water dripping on the left side below the elbow. It is not the elbow leaking, but the water is coming from the union and traveling down the pipe and then falling when it reaches the elbow.
