Sad Day - Closed Pool!

I hear you. Fall trip here also. Next year NO trips planned so I'm gonna keep the pool open till I'm good and ready to close it rather than "having" to close it by a certain date. Somehow makes it harder.
We do usually close our pool the week after Labor Day, have done it every year since owning our first pool. With the seasonally warm temps it had me sad but the weather changed very quickly and I'm sure with the 50's nights and the rain the water temp dropped quickly. I'm expecting leaves to start dropping soon, maybe while we are gone ... I was driving by a farm today and the corn stalks were all brown already and I noticed some trees were changing color as well. Nobody usually goes into the water when it's below 80 and I am the one to grin and bear it. Depending how it goes opening wise, if it is a mess I may try that soft closing that @Mdragger88 said - get rid of the ladder and stuff in the pool and just keep it working into October then officially close it.

The only issue I really have with doing the soft close/open is water on the cover- i just have to be more vigilant about pumping it off or it will displace too much water which will come out of the skimmer. Then when you do pump it off the pool water level will be low. In my pool there’s not a huge margin there. I remove the weir door to give me more leeway.
The automatic cover pump makes staying on top of it pretty easy though.

I tend to use a sump pump on my winter cover during the winter. I go out there a few times when the water isn't frozen or just a thin layer and remove as much water as I can. In the past I've left the sump pump on the cover but I used to make it gravity drain and then didn't take it off and it would freeze into the water!🤣

I "should" have more time next year to devote a little more time to pool closing. I didn't do anything with the filter other than crack the unions to drain the pipes, put the valve into the winterize slot and remove the drain plug on the filter. When I come back I'll fully winterize the filter and tighten up the cover. Bought some food cling wrap and am going to try and use that this winter around the cover.
