I'm noticing the bolts in the main beams for the screen enclosure over the pool are rusting. My concern is that these rusting bolts are contributing to the many stains in my pool. I will be having my 34 year old fiberglass pool refinished shortly and if these rusty bolts dripping down on my pool are causing staining I will replace the 34 year old cage before the refinishing of the pool. There are many different stains in my pool now but none of them are rust. So my question is , will these rusty bolts cause staining on my newly refinished pool surface?

Is it possible for rain water dripping off of rusty bolts to stain a pool?
Well, everything is possible. That said iron laden water dripping into pool water will likely cause no harm.

However, iron laden water dripping on your decking or other solid surfaces would almost surely be a guaranteed stain.

I would replace at least the bolts and perhaps the cage if you are inclined to go that route.

We will be replacing the cage but if the rusty bolts aren't likely to cause staining on my new pool surface then that project can wait a bit.
