Running the Spa Correctly

Hello, I have an attached spa to the pool (see picture). My question is how to properly run the water in the spa. Is the spa's water supposed to spill over the spillway into the pool in order to return to the filter? If the spa's water does not spill over the spillway then how the spa's water is returned to the filter to be filtered? My spa's water currently does not spill over the spillway into the pool but the water in the spa looks bad like unfiltered water. Thanks in advance for your help.

lp,

You must run the spillway at least once a day for an hour or so to keep the water in your spa fresh and chlorinated..

It does not appear that you have automation... If so you either need to remember to turn the spillover on each day (doubtful) or you should turn on the make-up valve. This valve should allow fresh water into your spa whenever the pump is running, even if not in the spa mode.

I believe that your make-up valve is right above the gray check valve in your return line...

The downside of using the make-up water is that the aeration caused by the spillover will increase your pH...

Thanks for posting,

Jim R.

Hi Jim, thanks for your quick reply. I attach my pool lines picture with valves labeled. Is valve 1 the make-up valve in the picture or the little gray knob labeled in red letters? And which direction, A, B, or C should I turn the make-up valve so that fresh water would enter the spa and spill over onto the spillway? By the way, what is the little gray knob that I labeled in red letters? Thanks again.
