Running Spa Year Round

New pool owner here (via home purchase). Trying to better understand if the attached pool spa could be used year round (while pool closed in winter), or if it's even recommended. I asked our pool company, they said the systems need to be separated:

They looked at your system and said that it will be at least $790 to separate the system- but unfortunately couldn't tell exactly since the system is too low and we will know once we start cutting - how many valves we will use.

I'm not totally clear on what would need to be separated - could someone with a better understanding dumb it down for me? Trying to understand if it's even worth the hassle. Thanks!

In general, it is not worth the hassle.

It will add complexity to your pool and how you manage it.

You have two pumps with two filters. What is each pump and filter for?

Greetings, @ajw22 - the additional pump/filter is for the pool fountains that spray from the pool sides.

As much as I like having the spa year round, I'm leaning towards it being too much of a hassle. Especially being my first season with the pool, and not fully understanding the inner workings yet.

It sounds like it involves adding additional valves, I'm assuming for extra protection to prevent spa water in the pool plumbing during the winter. Although I wasn't quite clear on what they meant with the system being too low and they would know once cutting how many valves.

Thanks @PoolStored. Sounding more and more like a bad idea. Even though our winters are mostly mild here in Virginia...I'm thinking it's not worth the risk and hassle now.

At our previous home we left our hot tub...maybe we should have taken it with us!
