robot and lightning?

Hey everyone. I have/had a polaris 8642 corded robot for 2 years. About a year ago it would not get power....I brought it in and they replaced the controller and the cord under warranty no questions asked. Since then I have been diligent about unplugging the unit when thunderstorms are coming. Well the same no power issue recently happened and this time they say the controller, cable, and motor needs replaced to the tune of $1400...I'm obviously not going to do that.

My question is....is it possible (even with the controller unplugged from power outlet) for lighting to hit the pool/robot when it's submerged in the pool.

And if so would a cordless robot not be just as susceptible to lighting if kept in the pool.

I would more suspect the cord itself where it attaches to the controller. That is a known trouble point for the Polaris. I have redone mine several times.
