Other than the obvious of returning water to the pool... what is the recommended way to direct the return jets?

I have heard some say they point them straight out or down to circulate the water better. I have heard some say they point them to just disturb the surface water some as it helps with the skimmer.

What is the "typical" or "common" answer here?

Personally I have always had them aiming slightly at the surface to keep the pool water circulating around the pool.

I hate to say it, but whatever works best for your pool! If the return water ripples the surface, that can drive up pH if you have that issue. Otherwise you are correct to focus on skimming. That is the main function of the directional returns.

With 2 water bowls and a 36" sheer descent... ripples are the least of my pH concerns. LOL

I appreciate your thoughts.
