Just installed this EC-342001.

One issue has been a pretty annoying resonance when it runs. At certain speeds it turns into a high pitched sound that carries quite far. At higher speeds this is masked by the water and fan noise but at low speeds it is distracting. I have to bring the speed down to 800 to make it inaudible from 30 feet away. 1200 it is clearly audible even above ambient traffic levels.

I guess I’m wondering if this is just typical of these pumps and thus I should just put in an enclosure (and if so, is there a thread on reasonably priced panels I can attach to posts and/or come with their own posts?) OR should I be concerned that the bearings are bad or something similar—I also hear a brief sound when I start/stop the pump that sounds pretty bad to my ears…

Noise is always slightly personal, so I just want to confirm if I need be concerned and if so how to better test or if not how best to mitigate…

Many thanks!

Hmmm. Was unable to attach video so I linked to it: New video by Solh Zendeh

Not normal. Check for something in the fan at the back of the motor. That's always the first place to look. Be sure the fan shroud hasn't been pushed into the fan blades, that happens as well. After the, call the installer and have him deal with it.

Thanks—I’ll do that!

Hi! Thank you again for your thoughts on this. I checked for any obvious physical issues and didn’t see any. Leslies guy is coming today to check it out.

Just to confirm: there are two noises I hear that seem unusual to me.

1. The squeal when I turn it on/off. That seems obviously a problem, but it is intermittent so of course this morning when the pool guy is coming I’m unable to reproduce.

2. The resonant whine that changes with speed. I expected this pump to be basically silent except for the water noise and maybe some air wooshing at high speeds. Just want to confirm this high pitched whining is abnormal even apart from the squeal, and I should eg expect that at anything < 1500 rpms for this pump to be virtually silent, because that continues to happen always and is incredibly annoying.

Just so I’m clear: you agree that both are not normal? Sorry to be so nit-picky, but I have had experience where people will just say “noise is normal, what do you want me to do” because they don’t want to replace it (or they are deaf! My dad is practically deaf from a lifetime of mechanical work).

Thank you!!
