Folks -

I'm gearing up to remove my 36sqft Pentair DE filter and install a 420sqft Waterway filter.

We had a deluge of rain the past two days and my pool is nearly overflowing. This got me to thinking - do most cartridge filter setups have a three-way valve that allows the water to be directed to waste? My soon to be replaced DE filter uses one of those backwash valves which makes it pretty easy.

I would recommend that in addition to a filter bypass if you close pool. Cartridge filters can clog quickly during opening so a bypass during the initial SLAM can save quite a bit of time. Then when all the algae is dead, you can vacuum to waste with the other port. This will avoid multiple cartridge cleanings.
