Hello all, I am in the process of rehabbing a very much so abandoned pool at my home. Pretty much replacing everything from liner to equipment and such. I pressure tested the lines and found that they don't hold pressure. I'm getting an estimate to have the liner replaced as well as the lines and equipment installed. I intend to dig the trenches for the lines myself since I am renting a machine for digging in the yard. I'm considering doing the lines and equipment installation myself as I'm not unfamiliar with plumbing. The liner I will not as I have no experience in it. Also, just a heads up, I love in Rhode Island and my pool is an inground 16x32. It has concrete walls and is probably over 30 years old. My questions are: What would you recommend for in ground piping? I was planning on just doing schedule 40 1-1/2 PVC, but the individual who gave ne the estimate was saying he would do it with Well Piping since it is bug resistant and that it would eliminate most of the underground joints. Is this a better option? Also, how does the pipe penetrate the wall of the pool? Any experience in if the concrete was cast around the pipe most likely or does it fit through a hole in the concrete? Thanks in advance, this is going to be a big project.

This sounds like an exciting project!!! It is great that you can save some $$ by doing your own plumbing. Sch 40 PVC is the norm, there are some that use flexible sch 40 to avoid connections - pros and cons that you can search the forum on .
There is no set standard on size, depends on what you trying to achieve. Most returns to the pool are 1.5inch but can be 2inch. Most suction to the pump is 2inch or can be 2.5inch. The pipe through the wall of the pool was put in place then cemented around it. So, you may want to cut off pipe on outside of cement structure to allow reconnection. This avoids penetrating the cement wall again.
