Replacement pump plumbing

I am putting in a new pump that has a little different deminsions. The pump plumbing on the volute side has a t with a cap. Is it necessary? I need to shorten that section a few inches. It would be easier if it wasn’t there. I am not sure what its purpose is or if it even has a purpose.

I tried to read the number on the fitting, but couldn't get it off your pic.
