Refinishing Faux Rocks

I scavenged this used fountain from my sister's new house. it even came with a brand new, unopened pump. However, as you can see below, the look of the rocks can use some retouching.

Is there some sort of rock looking paint that I can spray on? Do I just brush it as clean as possible, maybe lightly abrade loose paint, and then spray paint grey, then speckle some black on it? Seems to me that an artist type person would be qualified to make this look like a new fountain again.

After previewing the image, it doesn't look too bad - kinda resembles rock still, except for the part holding the water below.

anyhow, what are your thoughts?

Clean it as best as you can and then use a water based paint for refinishing. Use several different colors in various diluted quantities to achieve the look you are after.

You are correct that those that typically do this type of work truly are artists.

I doubt any of these guys will touch a job that small but you can at least get some inspiration from their projects:
