Hi, I have a salt water pool. After this last hurricane I found that since my pool isn't hooked up to the generator, I was in a quandary about how to chlorinate my pool -not being there to manually add chlorine and pumps not operating. So I bought a floater for emergency situations like this one. Only to find out, the stores had a run on chlorine tablets and I couldn't find any at the time. So for my question. I want to buy some chlorine tablets to have on hand if the situation arises again. That way I can easily find a friend who could add a tablet to the floater for me. What type should I buy? It would be hopefully only short term if I ever needed them. Should I buy trichlor? or CalHypo?

Should I buy trichlor? or CalHypo?
Either is fine as long you ensure no one mixes the two types in a feeder or floater. Cal-Hypo and Trichlor do not mix at all. As you may know, Trichlor will increase the CYA and Cal-Hypo will increase the CH, so as long as you are aware of the current pool levels of each of those, then you know which one you can afford to see increased while you are away.

Hope that helps.

Yes it does. Thank you so much.

Use trichlor tablets - try to find ONLY 99% trichlor, not the typical “multipurpose” tabs that often have a lot of other chemicals in them. Usually you can find a 8-10lbs bucket of them in stores. They will store fine as long as you keep them dry and away from other chemicals.
