Questions regarding Filter/Pump for Intex 16' x 4' Above Ground

for the return, I used the standard Hayward return eye, when you get the thru-wall skimmer from Hayward, you will get this return. then to 'fix' the old suction line on the side, I picked up a standard 1.5" return fitting from Leslie's pool on the blvd (close to work). All the pipes were from Home Depot, and took me like 30 minutes to plumb it all in.

and yes, still way to cold to swim!

For the fitting you got from Leslie's, how did that "line up" size wise with the pre-cut hole in your liner from the original intex fitting? You don't mention needing the patch/re-cutting method. I am wondering how different mine might be since mine is not an ultra frame.

I've been reading like crazy and it seems that different intex pools have different sized holes. I read in one thread that the hole was a little bigger than a standard fitting but that person was able to just use the fitting anyway. I guess it was not so much bigger that it leaked.

My pool is full and I'd rather not drain so taking stuff off to measure is pretty much out of the question. I love the idea of just swapping out my old intex fittings for the "real" thing but I'm afraid I'll start (with the bowl in the pool method) and find out the hole is too big. I might have to go the "custom adapter" route and keep what is actually attached to the pool in place.

I was considering the unions from Home Depot that someone on another thread just used but so far when he tested he had leaks...so now I'm afraid of that too. (and I went out yesterday and bought everything to try that option!) lol

Maybe this just isn't a job for an overly cautious fearful person.

Nah piece of cake. My biggest fear was cutting the liner when I put my skimmer in. Question, with your pool does it plumb up with the intex 1.5" hoses. Ya know the ones with the Grey knuckles on it. And for your suction and return. Do they have a rather large fitting on the inside? With suction line can you unscrew a screen in the pool and replace it with a little blue adapter for the intex skimmer

if you can send a picture of either your return or suction line here I will be able to tell you real quick if it will work or not. Mine, I just used the black gasket, and centered my new item in the hole that was "provided" when I removed the old. When I did the skimmer, I did have to lower my pool to put it in right. but with both holes for suction and return, I just prepped the new item, in this case the suction line, I put the plug in it and had the black gasket in place, unscrewed the old one, I had pastic bags covering the holes in the inside and out, undid it, and quickly put the new fitting in and tightened it up with the nut and 2nd black gasket. I lost maybe, maybe...... 1/3 to 1/2 a gallon of water.

I will go take some quick pics. I'm not using intex hoses. I just have the hoses that came with my pump/filter and they are attached to the plungers with hose clamps so there's no intex connection issues with the hoses themselves. I assume once I change to pvc I can just attach them the same way with the hose clamps.

Did the black gasket you used come with the new fitting or did you have to reuse what was on the intex pool fittings? I don't even remember how those go together it's been so long since we got the pool. brb with a couple pics.

the black gaskets came with my Hayward 1.5" adapters, actually it came with 2 black gaskets and a cork gasket. I didn't use the cork one

OK First pic, outside plunger assembly for intake....regular hose attached with hose clamp to plunger. The Intex hose stuff is long gone, although I think it's probably buried somewhere in the garage!





Second pic, inside of wall fitting where skimmer is attached. It is the sort of two tier threaded piece inside where the larger threads would be for a strainer thing (never use it) and the smaller threads are to screw on the attachment for the skimmer.

As usual my attachment is ghetto. LOL The suction of the pump is more than enough to hold it on so I don't bother to screw it in anymore. It's a pain to unscrew it when I don't have time to tend to the skimmer basket and due to my procrastination I don't have to worry about it falling off when the pump is off because the pump is never, ever, ever off. Hence the "you're right! I need a timer!" thread I started over in the pump station section..

Note the bradford pear flower floating by....

My return side is exactly the same with the exception that I have nothing at all screwed on to the inside...

ok, I had to go to my phone to see the pictures, Office blocks photobucket. yes you have the larger sizes like I had. you should be fine with the standard Hayward Fittings from Leslie's. just remember when you do the suction part, and you have your new thru-wall skimmer in, with that 1.5" opening, you will need to get 2 plugs for it. just remember to put the 'plug' in before you go putting it in the pool.

Like you I am still learning. TFP has been a great help with advice and direction.

On my pool, you can see the pictures in the thread, I did a 90 degree fitting right at my return line so I didn't have to deal with too far out, and i got the valves in as well.

I think all in all I spent $40 at the local H.D.

I am not planning to replace my skimmer mainly because I don't want to have to lower my water depth. My frame is 48" but my actual water depth is 42" and I'd rather not be any more shallow than that. For now I'll keep on keepin' on with the ol over the wall skimmer.

It sounds like the simplest route for me is to just go to leslie's and look for 2 of the 1.5" return/intake fittings. The plugs are sold separately? Are you talking about the cap looking thing?

It seems like I can go return most of what I bought at HD and maybe not spend too much more. I already have 1 elbow and 1 valve and a 2' piece of 1.5" pvc. I think I can get by with just picking up a second elbow and valve if I go with the Hayward fittings. Oh, and I think I need something to reduce the 1.5" pvc to a hose fitting of some sort. I bought something in Lowe's last night I think will work...

Ok. I went to Leslie's and bought 2 return/inlet fitting things, 1 eyeball and 1 plug.

I am going to lowes later to get another elbow etc. so I'll have what I need for both fittings.

Now that I will have these fancy schmancy fittings with the ability to screw a plug into them from the inside, do I really need the ball valve on the outside? If I want to clean my filter or my pump skimmer basket thing, couldn't I just plug each return with the screw in plugs? I could save money if I don't use the ball fittings...

I chose to use the ball valves due to the fact if I want to do maint. On the pump/filter I don't have to climb in the pool

Hmmm, well my return and inlet are both pretty accessible from the outside. I think for now I might just go with a plug inside for each and if/when I go fully pvc I might decide to add the ball valves. That will save a little.

Looking forward to trying this tomorrow. Wish it wasn't going to be cooler. I love today's weather!

Look at all this! lol. This is some from home depot and lowes yesterday and some from leslie's and lowes today. There are at least 7 extra pieces from yesterday's purchases. I have at least 2 others from today to return. I am not sure which pieces will work better for the outside hoses. I'd rather use the larger one because it will be 1 piece instead of 2. I'm trying to use as few as possible.

I'll find out tomorrow what will work with the hoses and I'll know what I need. (I hope) the third set is for the inside of the inlet side. I forgot I need some way to attach the hose that goes from the skimmer to the inlet. I bought a few pieces to try.

Tomorrow will be an exciting day! Might be good exciting, might be bad exciting. I'll take pics either way.

Well I started. Now I've stopped. Started my own thread. It's leaking and I have no idea how to fix it. So I'm doing nothing. Not sure how long to wait for replies/help but I see no point in wasting time trying to move forward if the very first thing I did leaks and I can't make it stop. *sigh* I knew better but I started this anyway.
