Question on tanning shelf

We’re in the digging stage. I noticed the tanning shelf looked short, it’s supposed to be 5’. Obviously I’m not a pool builder and am embarrassed to ask them for fear they think I’m questioning them. How after getting robbed on a bad deck from previous contractor, I’m concerned of not speaking up when I see things might not be right. So I figure I’ll ask here. Is the ground shorter because rebar and gunite will take the space? It’s measuring 4’ instead of 5’. However the other parts of the pool dug from earth are spot on, pic included. Insight would be appreciated.

Yes. Once they install the steel, you will get a better representation of what it will look like. Then once the gunite is applied it will be right where it needs to be.

What do you want the final dimension to be? Unless you are siting parallel to the long side 5' is very narrow for sitting in a lounger. Even 6' can make it challenging to walk around without getting out of the water. Get a lounger out and mark off the distance around it and make sure you are comfortable with the space while you still have time to change it if you want.

The tanning ledge will be 5’x30’x18” deep. Then we did a standing ledge 2’ wide. My kids play water polo year round, we wanted more swimming/treading area so the other area of the pool is 6’ deep 36’x15. We never used our shallow end of the pool we had removed, so got rid of that all together. Any “tanning ledge” I’ve ever used we are sitting in chairs not lounge chairs but 4’ is definitely shorter than we wanted. If we want to put lounge chairs, we will just turn them. We basically built that area as like a baby/toddler pool area, or sit and watch kids. Hope that makes sense.

They will look under sized until Shotcrete, that crew should bring the thickness up to specs.
If you plan on having Ledge Lounges 7’ will give you a good area to walk in front of the lounge.View attachment 611693
Thank you for the picture! Makes sense. Our tanning ledge will be for chairs, not loungers. I don’t plan on doing a lot of tanning, skin cancer runs in our family. Mainly just an area to stick umbrellas, watch our kids swim or play water polo. But if we want a lounger we will turn it long ways.

Am I understanding your dimensions right, you’ll have a 20’x66’ pool? So jealous! Makes my 40’ L seem like a kiddie pool 🤣

Kids only play water polo, no competitive swimming, is that why you didn’t spring for the extra 10+ feet for a full 25 meters 😉

No sorry I’m not great at explaining myself. 36x20… 5 of the 20 is the sun shelf. So 13.5x36 is 6’ deep (1.5’ standing shelf by sun shelf). My kids are on a swim team strictly for water polo, minimal swim meets.
