Question on TA, Dichlor and CYA

Hi there,

We have a 500 gallon J-385 tub. Filled in November and it's just the two of us in it so we generally don't change the water more than about every 8 months. We use the dichlor then bleach method.

I do a full test once a week and shock on that day (today, since we are never in on Wednesday nites) and after the first month or so when we know how things are behaving, we test the FC/CC about 4 or 5 times a week.

I keep my TA at about 50 via the add MA, aerate, test method; and I'm on well water but CH is 100 so nothing to do there. Borates go in once everything is set from a fresh fill; CYA I like to keep about 30

The water is crystal clear with no foam (I'm on top of the filter rinse/change/cleaning/swapping). We DO get "fizz" when in that dissipates as soon as the jets and aerators are off. Usually I find it fizzes more as the water gets older. After looking at my weekly numbers today, I'm wondering a few things based on this info:

1.) The TA is at ~75 (between the 7th and 8th drop to stay red)
2.) I do need to shock today and my CYA is right around 20 so I need to do a dichlor shock to add some CYA back in
3.) pH is always 8.0 when I test. I've posted about that before and folks thought that was ok

Now that TA is 75 and I'd like it down around 50, there's no reason not to add MA to get it in range (and rachet the pH down a bit). Does Dichlor affect TA/pH? I feel like it does something with pH but I can't remember on the TA and couldn't find anything in the sticky post on it. Since I know I HAVE to get the dichlor in it to get CYA to around 30, I don't want to do that PLUS add MA and have things swing the other way. Is the fizz a result of water getting old or something else?

thanks in advance for any advice!

Adding DiChlor will lower your pH

In your tub, each oz of Dichlor will raise your FC by 8.3, raise CYA by 7.6, lower pH by 0.3, and raise salt by 6.8

It will lower TA, but not much

At TA of 50-90 is recommended for hot tubs

What matters is where it balances for you and your pH

I keep mine around 30-40 because that is where my pH will remain stable at arounr7.7 to 7.8 day over day
