A friend of mine has a vacation rental with a spa ( as I do) and she does not like using bromine which is what I’ve been using. She says it doesn’t work for her so she uses chlorine and so that she doesn’t have to maintain it every day , she uses a chlorine floater . Is that commonly done / recommended with good results? Any time I’ve read up on using chlorine , I don’t recall seeing anything about using a floater.

A spa floater will hold 1” trichlor tablets. The holes on the floater are smaller. You have to be quite careful and keep the tub at a low standby temperature (~ 92F) or else the tablets will dissolve very quickly. The tablets are also fairly acidic and can quickly diminish the TA and cause the pH to crash. It’s a good idea to maintain a higher TA when using chlorine tablets and to check TA and pH regularly. As with a pool, stabilizer (CYA) buildup can render the chlorine less effective over time so CYA has to measured and adjusted as needed with water exchange.

TFP usually recommends the Dichlor/Bleach method for maintaining a chlorinated hot tub. It is a very simple method from a chemistry standpoint but it’s one downside is that you usually have to add chlorine (bleach) once per day in order to maintain a safe free chlorine level. That makes it hard to leave the tub unattended for any length of time, such as vacations or in a rental property.

FYI -- they do make small Saltwater Chlorine Generators for hot tubs. Might want to look into that.
