Our 19 year old Doughboy pump motor finally died. We are trying to decide if it is worth buying anything at this late time of the season (maybe only a few weeks left in the swim season) or wait till next year.
We are trying to decide what would be the most economical choice at this late time in the season.
Here are the options we've come up with:
1. replace motor for $50 - $100
2. buy a rebuilt pump for anywhere in the range of $150 - 175
3. buy brand new now and shut down pool in the next month
4. forget it all and shut down now.
OR
Any other options?
Thanks for your input.

I usually think I will have it better financially down the road. But the funny thing is, the rest of the house never stops needing new things. This spring was a new SWG and a new $1800 fridge. If I had put off any projects last fall they would have hurt twice as much when I waited.

UPDATE.
We found an old cheap Hayward Power Flo 1510 z, 3/4 hp pump for $15, to get us thru the end of the season. We did not want to waste 8 months of the warranty on a new pump while it sits in the basement all winter.
Looking to purchase a VS next spring when they go on sale.

Funny thing - that old Hayward 3/4 hp runs quieter and better than our well loved and well used 19 year old Doughboy 1 hp. I guess we didn't realize how bad the Doughboy had gotten over the last few years.

You're not wasting 7 months. If you buy it at opening of the pool season it'll still sit the rest of the year.

:) If we wait till May, we would get 4-5 months use before it "hibernates" for the winter. Because of the grackles that drop bird poop all over our pool, we can't open till the babies are out of the nest. Seems like those first few months would be best to use during the season.

We are quite surprised.
