Pump Overcurrent

I have a 4 year old First Choice (Waterway Plastics) 1.4 HP VS pump that appears to have died.

It was working fine yesterday and I noticed the pool was still last night when it should have been running so I checked and got an "Overcurrent error". I tried to restart it and it clicked faintly but did not start and went back to the overcurrent error. It cycled itself several times on its own and them gave me the red "error" led and the overcurrent error on the screen.

I checked the connections in the control panel and the AC voltage to the pump and they were fine. I shut off the breaker for about 15 min, tried again, and still same error and will not start.

Not sure where to take the troubleshooting from here. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.

Use a hex key in the back to see if the shaft turns freely.

Ok, Took a bit, but I got the cover off the back and the shaft turns freely. I tried to start it an noticed the fan on the shaft jumps a little bit with the faint click, but does not turn. Its really slight, but I can see it move.

In the process I did notice a couple of what appears to be burn marks that I know where not there before. Hopefully this doesn't mean what I think it does...

Take everything apart to see if the impeller is rubbing on the sealplate.

While I was turning the shaft, I could hear the impeller start to pump what was left in the basket, so I don't think its locked up at all as it turns freely. At this point I think the motor just got fried... Not sure how after only 4 years.

Thanks for the research on the motors! I was thinking about it and I might be better off just replacing the whole unit with a better known brand. I have always had trouble keeping the seal on the basket and just not happy with the unit in general.

I've been looking and there are several decent offerings from Pentair and Hayward that I'm looking at, but I'm not sure if there are other brands I should be looking at that would offer durability and longevity for the long run at a little more reasonable price point. Definitely don't mind paying for quality, but I'm just not too sure about the various other brands I am seeing that seem to be more reasonable.
