Pump made noises then shut off. Help!

We were enjoying the pool tonight, started hearing the pump making short, sporadic, grinding noises, then after 15 minutes of sporadic noises, the pump and all power completely shut off. The pump was very hot to the touch.

Took off the back cover and cleaned out build up. Waited 10 minutes and tried to turn on, pump powered on but didn’t work, instead it made a humming noise (see linked video). We shut it off completely for the night and we have someone coming tomorrow to look at it.

Our pump is 9 years old.

Any insights?

Let someone come and look at it. Was there water in the pump when it shut off?

It could be that the bearings in the motor are shot, the pump lost prime and the shaft seal failed, there may have been debris in the impeller. All can cause what you are experiencing

Could you tell if the grinding was coming from the motor or the wet end..

Time for a good variable speed pump now.

There was water in the pump. I can’t really say where the noise was coming from. Our pool guy is coming today so hopefully we can figure it out.

There should be a sticker at the red arrow, can you show that?

The capacitor is probably bad, try replacing that, but be careful since it might be charged.

Remove the back cover and see if the shaft turns freely.
