Pump failed - what to do while waiting on new one

Hello folks,

My old Hayward Super Pump just started tripping the breaker and I went ahead and purchased a VSP to replace it with. It's going to take about a week for the new pump to get here, so in the meantime my pool will not be circulating.

Obviously I'm worried about algae growth, etc during this time. Is there anything i can/should do while waiting for the new pump in order to prevent my water from getting totally screwed up? The water is well balanced and has been trouble-free.

My instinct is to test FC and pH at least once daily and balance as needed, and drop the robot in for a few hours a day to keep the water moving.

Any extra tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Liquid chlorine disperses pretty quickly without pump. Problem is it gets depleted in local areas and that gives opportunity for algae colony to take hold. If you keep FC up and circulate at least a little like Pat recommends you should only require a quick SLAM once the new pump is installed. Key is FC (wow that rhymes!)

Quick follow up... given the impending hurricane I am tempted to put the cover on the pool for the next few days to protect it from what could be massive amounts of leaves and tree debris. Is there a good reason to not do this? Figured this might also help protect from sunlight chlorine loss while the water is not moving.

May help, can't hurt.

Raise your FC halfway between target and SLAM FC level before covering.
