Pump and filter

Hi All, I am trying to figure out what size pump I would need. We are installing a 24ft round 54 deep pool. I have a sand filter from our last pool which was an 18ft round. I am not sure how to tell the size of the filter. I need to get a new pump motor. What size do I need. the pool is 13,000 gallons. I have been reading 1hp however I feel like that won't be big enough then I read that if I get a pump that is too big it could damage my filter? Would a 1.5hp be okay for this size pool?

Welcome to TFP :)

This is the hard part.. The best pump right now is a VS pump, they are great, will save you MASSIVE amounts of money in running the pump.. Save your filter because lower pressure is better for all filters...

If you can not get a VS pump the next best is a 2 speed pump.. run them on low 90% of the time and when needed to vacuum or something kick them up on high..

If all else fails get a max 1hp pump as anything above that is really just wasting power to clean the pool...

This year they are banning 1 speed pumps and you will only be able to get 2 speed or VS pumps...

this is a good VS pump...

This one has a 2 speed...

Thank you for the reply. I have to say I am totally clueless with VS pump and the one speed/2 speed. I have only ever had a 1hp or a 1.5hp. Would a 1.5hp be too much for my size pool. I read that the larger the pump for your size pool will turn over more water more often making for a cleaner pool?

Pool turnover is an old tale.. no need for it.. Run your pump and filter to get the quality of your water and keep the water clear of bugs.. some run 24/7 with a VS pump for 20 dollars a month and some like me run 12 to 14 hours a day for SWG to make chlorine.. only run your pump long enough to clean the surface and keep it clear.. Low and slow is the new model and works great for filters..

A 1.5 hp will work but it will make your filter work harder because water is blowing through it and not filtering much.. a 1 or 1.5 hp 2 speed is a better option, run on low and when vacuuming run on high..

thank you! so this is not a saltwater pool and if I do a 2 speed how do you switch back and forth? Is there a switch on the pump for that?

There is.. I have Intermatic PE653 so mine changed by a timer so I did not use the switch that came with it... :)
