Priming the Pump and Burping

I am brand new to pool ownership and pretty clueless at this point. Thanks in advance for your patience and assistance. In our Hayward manual it says that if the suction and outlet valves are open the pump will prime itself. There is no diagram showing where the suction and outlet valves are so I have no idea if they are open or not. The pump has air bubbles in the basket and there is "burping". The filter shows no PSI when the pump is running. We are planning to add a bit more water tomorrow to be sure that there is enough covering the skimmer, but am wondering what the next step should be if that doesn't work. Help please!

Hi Annette
First you want to make sure the water in your pool is coming up about halfway up your skimmer. My valves run in the same direction as the white PVC pipes. Can you take a picture of your equipment and post it? I'm no expert but hopefully somebody should be along shortly to help you. the burping and the bubbles suggest to me you don't have enough water in your pool and coming at least halfway up your skimmer.

A,

Welcome to TFP.. A Great resource for all pool owners needing patience... :snorkle:

Most above ground pool pumps are primed by gravity because the water is above the pump.

First thing I'd check is to make sure that the water is above the hose that goes between the input (suction side) of the pump and the pool. I would also make sure that any valves in this line are open so that water flows from the pool and into the pump. With the pump off, if you take the pump basket lid off, water should just flow out like crazy...

The second thing to do is make sure that any valve on the hose that goes between the filter and the pool is open.

Not sure of your specific filter, but there should be a valve on top of the filter that should be in the "filter" position.

Basically water is sucked from the pool, through the filter and then back to the pool.

If you want a better answer, it would be helpful if you posted a pic of your filter and pump as well as what model number they are..

Thanks for posting,

Jim R.
