Prevent animals from getting behind spa's spillover

I am replacing the underlying 18-year-old liner which I believe to be damaged due to a hedgehog. When it burrowed just under the spa's spillover behind the rocks, it made a huge mess of crushed rock, debris, etc. Is there a way to prevent and/or detour them? I COULD put a ton of mothballs as it is behind the liner but feels like a bad idea.

Hire a trapper to catch them in a cage and relocate them away from your property.

Don't use mothballs around your spa unless you like the small of it when in the spa. Ask me how I know.

Burying wire mesh around the area will block them from digging.

I am in NJ and there are zillions of things to deal with. Wire mesh might work.
I can PM you the pest control company who I used to setup a baited cage and catch an ground hog who was burrowing holes and chewing wires on my property. He may go up your way.

Thanks. North Jersey has zillions of them. I can get someone out there but I am not sure how I will notice if one comes back? I got lucky with the major debris field so to speak.

I use Blink wireless cameras.

When I had a hole in the ground and chewed irrigation wires I setup a camera to catch who was nesting in there. Then I knew what I was dealing with and sent it to my pest guy. He setup cages by the hole. My camera showed me when the cage caught some critters and I called him to come and relocate them.

There are trail cameras you can setup to monitor an area and see what is going on at night.
