Have I talked to you about tennis balls yet ? I keep 2 in each skimmer and they suck up anything we've ever thrown at them. Back when the kids were little and had lots of friends over, it was alot.

Most “scum” at the water line after a big party is basically hardened soap scum - calcium reacts with oils and lotions forming calcium stearate which is a hardened soap scum. The MagicEraser should take it right off with a bit of elbow-grease. Doing it from inside the pool is easier than outside on the deck.

It's my secret quiet time. With a snorkle mask you can see 1000 times better than from the deck and it's 95% swimming 5% work. While snorkeling away, it's so peaceful and serene.
I mean. I still don't do it nearly as often as I should. But I enjoy it when I do.

My pool is only 4 1/2 ish feet deep (flat bottom) but still! I can get a better look at those pesky spots in the “deep” end
To be honest, July 4 will be three years we’ve had the pool and I’ve never been underwater in it.
I’m more of a hang on the seats with a cocktail type, but if it means a cleaner pool….
We have a decent stretch of 90 degree weather ahead 10+ days.
Yesterday pool was covered til about 12:30 pm water temp 86 when I uncovered it. About 5:30 pm it was 89.
What is the best route to keeping the water temp coolest?
I have been closing it at night (maybe this isn’t the best?)

Typically open at night will produce more evaporation and more heat loss will occur bevause of it. Closed during the day is a crud shoot IMO. It blocks the sun but also steams under the cover and might vary day to day with sun intensity.
Does the tennis ball staying in the same spot in the water for a good period of time (10 min+) indicate a flow problem?

Also, for the line - wipe with a microfiber rags.
Think of it like the difference between what a broom does and what a flat mop does.
I clean houses & a brush on a smooth tub for instance takes lots of scrubbing with sub par results in regards to scum/body oils but a microfiber rag wipes it right off.
Also, no potential damage to the surface.
Magic erasers (melamine sponges) are mildly abrasive so not something you want to use often unless other less aggressive choices don’t work.

after 4 test spots

When I held the sock/BK on the spot it kinda poofs out of the sock (similar to squishing cya)
When I swish water around to dissolve the powder it looks dirty/brownish

I would say I used 2 Tablespoons or less total on about a dozen spots

It’s possibly either an iron stain or cobalt spotting.
Have you tested the stains with ascorbic acid (vitamin C)?

Yes I have. Last year, not yet this season. Both seasons tried trichlor puck also.
I tried rubbing a vit c tab directly on spots, crushing and leaving on spots, also tried laying a tab whole on the spots (overnight) no change .
Sounds like we could be narrowing down the what, now the why?

It’s not anything you did.
Assuming it is indeed cobalt spotting, it’s an artifact of the gelcoat/FG manufacturing process. Some manufacturers add an organic cobalt compound to the polymers used in the gelcoat (and the FG resin) as a curing accelerant. It allows the manufactured shell to solidify and harden faster. The downside is that pool water can sometimes degrade the gelcoat and cause the cobalt to oxidize which creates little brown/black spots.
Jacks Magic sells a chemical product called the “Iron and Cobalt Stuff” that you can use to help remove the spots. But it’s something you should do in the off season when you don’t need to use the pool.
