Hello,
I have been reading and learning for a couple of years here and use Poolmath to take care of my pool. After we bought this home, I put in a new SWG cell since the old one was toast and a new variable pump since the old one burnt out right after closing on the home. ;-) So in past 2 years I have balanced and maintained to pool fairly well. Over this past winter, I fixed an unknown broken return pipe after I discovered my salt level drop a lot. So this summer season (phoenix) I started off with a diluted pool and no issue other than preparing for the heat. Long story short, new cell, pump and cartridges and all is going well. Clean and clear pool. At the end of May the heat was starting to rise and I thought I would get ready before we went for a short vacation trip. When I bought the home, the CYA was high sky and Ca high. I drained part of pool to bring down but not really enough. But I did get the new salt cell running about 45% in the summer to hold the chlorine fine and pool seemed good. When the pool temps dropped of course the algae was not much of a concern and SWG was off with just me adding a little chlorine as needed in the 'off season' (no heater). I was planning on a drain and fill restart this year since the CYA and Ca was high but with the pipe leak I basically diluted it back to good range without even intending.
............so over 3 to 4 days while gone the robot pool cleaner was not run but we came home to with a little residue growth on the floor. The only skimmer was fully of leaves also. I tested and low free chlorine and the salt cell had tripped off. I cleaned cell and boost chlorine to start to correct.
This morning should be back to my usual of keeping pH down below 8 and FC 6 or higher. I had hoped CYA about 30 to 50 would have been enough but the heat and sun burned up the chlorine faster than I believed and now I have boost CYA to 80 (with my eyes maybe 70 to 90)
My question is -- Am I at the scrubbing and 'elbow grease' stage to clear the scum on the bottom of the pool? The water never became cloudy or green just the intensity of the growth on the pool floor darkened. I have been brushing and robot cleaning for the last 3 days. I usually have clean and clear pool. Is it just the 'pebbletec' surface that is holding onto the algae too strong bond or even with brushing the algae is still alive? I figure once chlorine killed everything off, I would be able brush it back to clean.
any thoughts?
