Since I just started taking over maintenance of my pool i'm now pouring muriatic acid. what's the secret? There has to be a better way to do this. I try not to breath and hold my breath but I still got a big whiff of the fumes and it was killer. Made me a little dizzy afterwards. Do I wear a mask? I'm also wearing rubber gloves.

You should always wear eye protection when handling muriatic acid. You do not want to breathe muriatic acid fumes. If you spill any on your clothes it will cause damage. Muriatic acid may sting a bit if you get it on your skin, but won’t normally cause any serious harm as long as you rinse it off right away.

Muriatic acid should be added to the pool by pouring slowly in front of a return jet with the pump running. You should pour slowly enough that pouring an entire jug takes more than two minutes. Leave the pump running for at least 30 minutes after adding muriatic acid.

I rarely have to manual pour in MA now that I dose my MA instead, but when I would pour, I found turning your head backwards, or sideways, helps with not getting the fumes inhaled. It wont hurt skin (just itch usually (if some gets on you) unless you have open cuts, then ouch, so gloves are a good idea in general too. Be sure not to spill any on your pavers/deck etc as it can cause staining. I would always make sure to rinse the bottom/side of the jug with pool water, after pouring, so there was not acid dripping off the jug from where I was just pouring on the way back to where I was storing the MA.
