Pool Bottom Always "dirty"

Good day all!

I've been a long time lurker and created an account a few months ago to use my TF test kit with. That was a great recommendation that I read from this board, so thank you for that.

This is my first post. I've been struggling with keeping the bottom of my pool clean for the last 3 weeks or so. We opened it in late May, and after initial opening, the pool bottom had stayed pretty clean consistently through the summer until about 3 weeks ago. I'd probably vacuum it twice a week, tops, and even then it wasn't too bad.

However, as of the last three weeks or so, I'm vacuuming it every single day, and every single day (the next day, usually), it's filthy again...long dark streaks on the bottom of the pool that appears a brownish/yellowish color...more dark than yellow I'd say though. It also "sticks" pretty good so I have to go over it several times (slowly, of course) with my manual vacuum to get it "cleaned"....but alas, a few hours later, it starts to show up again, and the next day, it really starts to build up to a very noticible amount, so I have to vacuum it again...and rinse/repeat for the last 3 weeks...It's getting quite frustrating.

This exact problem occurred last year around this same exact time---pool mostly clean June through early August...then filthy. There are some trees around my pool but nothing that is blowing anything but small bits of leaves and what not---things that are obviously from trees, and those vacuum up just fine. But the brownish looking "residue" that I'm talking about here is the problem.

I do use a heater (heat pump) and a solar cover (maybe the cover is constantly dirty?)....but I've tried cleaning and replacing the solar cover daily...and the bottom is still dirty....and I've tried cleaning and leaving the cover off for a few days, and the bottom of the pool is still dirty. So I don't think it has anything to do with the cover, nor the trees around my yard.

I test the chemistry a few times a week and all the numbers are always good--and if they are slighly "not good" I adjust immediately. As of my last reading, here's my chemistry:

PH = 7.6
Alk = 70
CYA = 50
FC = 7.0
CC = 0
Hardness = 200

It's a 21 foot above ground, roughly 11,000 gallons. In Maine. The only thing I can think of is that whatever I'm cleaning is just returning back into the pool through the sand filter. There is one return jet. BUT, I've also tried vacuuming to waste and the problem just keeps coming back. Is it possible that the filter is not working at all, or that it is broken and returning debris into my pool? It's only 1.5 years old, as is the rest of my pool set up.

Or, is it possible it's some kind of algae (mustard perhaps) even though I've kept FC high enough per the CYA levels all summer long consistently? And the CC is 0? Could it be pollen that just blows in every day and is just something I have to deal with?

Sorry for the long post! TLDR: Bottom of my pool is always dirty, I clean it every day, and the same brown/yellow streaks show up in the same places every day. Chemistry I think is OK.

Hello, sorry for taking so long to get back to this thread. I've been away from home and unable to tend to it.

I was able to do the overnight loss FC test last night and this morning. Last night at dusk, FC = 12 or 12.5, hard to tell depending on one's definition of "clear" when putting the drops in. This morning pre dawn, FC = 10.5 or 11.

I state that it's hard to tell because the 2nd to last drop turns the solution from the slightest pink to essentially clear...but then the final drop seems to make it even "more clear"---that's why I put the two values.

But if we just use the first numbers, it seems there's a FC loss of 1.5, which is greater than the acceptable loss of 1.0. Does his mean there most definitely is something growing in my pool, or that's it's likely? I'm assuming it means the stuff that I am vacuuming and keeps coming back is algae? My only argument against that is that it never is on the walls, never on the surface of the water (visibly) and never actually in the water (visibly)---only on the pool bottom.

Attached are three pictures of what it looked like yesterday before I cleaned it, and a final picture of what it looked like after I cleaned it. This was around 3 pm yesterday afternoon. I got it pretty clean as you can see. I put the solar cover back on it so I can't see it right now at this moment, but if history serves as a guide, I'd guess some of that stuff is back on the bottom of the pool.

OK, I started the slam Thursday afternoon by cleaning the pool and then topping the FC up to 24 ppm per my CYA level of 60. I've checked and topped the chlorine up every so often since then, cleaned the pool yesterday, and will clean again today while maintaining the 24 ppm.

Last night before I went to bed, the FC level was around 25. This morning at dawn it was at 23, so it seems like after about 36 hours of slamming so far, the FC is being consumed either at the same rate as pre-SLAM, or slightly more consumption. Is that normal?

Pump has also been running this whole time. Is there any point during this process where I should consider giving the pump a break for a few hours? Thanks for your help!

Also on the chlorine drop test, you add drops until there is no longer a change in color. So in your above post #5 when adding that last drop makes it "more clear" that counts. If the next drop does nothing to the color/tint do not count it.

Your water looks clear, but that definitely looks like algae on the floor. Make sure you brush regularly and get into those algae hiding spots, in the ladder, under the ladder mat, foam piece of the weir door ... algae can hide and survive in any little nook.

You are on the right track, keep it up!

Thank you! I haven't gotten into the pool yet to get the nooks, ladder, etc, but I will tomorrow assuming it's safe to do so in water that has FC of 24+ (I believe I read it's safe to do so). With the pool being round, it's been pretty easy to brush mostly all surfaces from the deck/ground, but I'll do a more thorough brushing tomorrow.

It appears to be getting better. If on Thursday the bottom of the pool was at "x" dirty....Friday, it was about 1/4x dirty....and today was about 1/6x dirty, so it was a vast improvement pretty immediately. Not sure if my algae condition is considered light, moderate, or severe, but I'm pleased so far. Is it strange that it ONLY is visible on the floor, and not on the walls, ladder, or suspended in the water itself?

That's evidence of progress so keep it going. You appear to have a light algae problem and no, seeing algae on floor but not on walls is not strange but fairly common, especially for AGP.

It's safe to swim up to SLAM level, no one will notice, go swim.

Thank you Paul (and Pool Stored). I appreciate your help. Gave her a good scrubbing today, got in, etc. no problems. Still losing about 2 ppm FC overnight and when I add the solution to test for CC, it's turning a slight pinkish hue, so the SLAM continues onward. Pool is looking cleaner by the day though. There wasn't much to vacuum this morning at all.
