Polaris Volute Leaking / Crack

Going through 4th volute for my booster pump as the top (where you thread in a quick connect) keeps cracking, causing a leak. I DID NOT use any pipe dope / teflon tape which apparently causes the rounded, top neck to crack, and only used a small amount of magic lube.

Did anyone else experience something like this? When I called Polaris / Zodiac, they never experienced this and if / when there is a manufacturing defect, they would know immediately. Just ordered yet another Volute from Amazon and hoping for the best.

Zodiac recommended I "hand-tighten" the quick connect (similar to an engine oil filter), and this method only threads the connect half-way at best. Has anyone set up the quick connect this way? (i.e., only half-way in, and no leaks) - I will certainly try but somewhat skeptical.
Thanks!

Is there an oring on the connection? If so, you should use a small amount of lube on the oring and hand-tighten only. The oring is what will prevent leaks. In any case hand tighten even with lube tends to over-tighten and cause cracks. Tighten it enough to be snug and resist the urge to tighten beyond that point.

Thanks for your advice...no o-rings at the top where you connect the threaded quick-connect. Again, if I hand-tighten this, I can only get it to the half-way point :) One funny thing is that the instruction specifically says "use teflon type"
