Plumbing mystery

Hi, thank you all in advance for your help. I have two plumbing questions. Will start with the simplest one for now. We bought a house with a pool that clearly has had some plumbing work. Pics below.
I want to reopen the main line, which is currently plugged outside the pool house (IMG 8766). I am not sure why it is plugged. There was a leak closer to the pump which was fixed shortly after our arrival, and I recall the guy saying he would come back and remove the plug, but they didn't come back, the company is really struggling now and it is almost impossible to get help.
My question is: can anyone think of a reason why I shouldn't just remove the plug, add piping outside and inside and start the main again?
Thank you so much.

The main was disconnected for a reason. Most likely a leak. You don't need a main drain. I would leave well enough alone.

As @PoolGate says, no reason for a main. As to your question, I see no reason not to hook it up again, if the leak was fixed. Worse case, you can turn it off again, like it is turned of now, if needed.

Great. Thank you both. That's interesting about not needing a main. We certainly have gotten by without one for a year, but our skimmer fills up really fast with leaves, so I'd love to have an alternative way to draw water when we go away for a few days.
I think the leak between the plug and the pump was fixed, so will think it over before giving it a try. My concern was that there was something between pool and plug which would be worsened, but by your replies, I'm guessing that the original problem was between plug and pump?

Thanks so much for your time-- I really appreciate it.
