We've always joked about getting a pool heater but hubs is seriously thinking about it now. Please tell me where to even start. We have a very simple setup - variable speed pump, sand filter, 1 main drain, 1 skimmer, 2 returns. No spa, SWG, fountains, or anything else. It would have to be a propane heater because we do not have natural gas service in our area and our electric is too expensive for a heat pump type. Pool is about 24,000 gallons. I'm fairly confident Mr. V can do the work himself but I need to start putting together a budget.

You want as large as you can get. (400k?) It takes BTUs to heat water and you have alot of water. So start with everyone's largest unit and whittle the field down from there.

Find out who in your area provides warranty and service for Raypak, Pentair, or Hayward pool heaters.

Your propane use is going to skyrocket ... 400,000 BTU's worth of propane is A LOT of gas .... That said, make sure you have the tank capacity to handle that kind of usage.

Do you have a gas line from the tank to your equipment pad already? If not, you kind of want that done by a licensed gas plumber. Can be a DIY job but someone with experience is better ... at least I would sleep better.

I think the Raypak AVIA is the way to go for your setup and it will have the ability to offer you WiFi controls for remote starting if you wish to go down that road.

I would recommend you look at heatpump not everybody loves them. But there are generally cheaper to run than natural gas or propane. It all depends on how fast you want the water to heat. If you get 140 k heat pump it could probably heat your pool .5f degree per hour. With a 400K gas would heat 1.5 deg/hr but will probably cost more per BTU. There are a bunch of calculators out there. For me with electric .22/kw it was far cheaper than propane or natural gas. I have a friend outside of Philly and love his heat pump.
