Please help! I think I have a hole in my cover

You should think about getting a proper solid safety cover to avoid this problem. It is expensive, but makes opening the pool soooo much easier. How long has this cover been in use? Eventually, those covers fail and get holes in them and you end up mixing the pool water with the cover water.

I mean I know but my cover is never this green. I should have said why do I have more algae this year than other years, even the one when I had a hole in my cover.

yeah I don't have a spare $4000+ to spend on a cover. This cover is cheap and old and I know this happens. but the last time it happened it was a thicker more expensive cover on it's first year. Now I get the cheapo $150 covers. this is it's 3rd year. Obv that's too long.

ok they are here - the guy seemed unconcerned about my issue and confident so fingers crossed!

it's open! they did not put the water in. there was a large hole in the cover. it's clear and green as expected. less staining than last time, but staining on the bottom which I've never had. they will vacuum and start the pump (main drain only) I will test the water after about an hour then add chlorine to 10 and see if it holds. then start the slam. while I fill, I guess? Can I slam a pool this low? or should I add chlorine now and wait til it fills to test and slam?

You can use a submersible and brush to circulate any FC adds. You risk the pool pump burning up if it loses prime if you use that now.

I'd get the jump on it but it won't change the price of beer if you wait until full.

ok Should I wait to test til it's full then? That will be like 2 days, but if it has chlorine I guess it's fine.

Your CYA needs 24 hours to mix, and then you need good overhead sun to test. It could be a while.

10 FC is slam for 0 CYA so at worst if you lost all your CYA, 10 is fine. If you retained any CYA, 10 is above min and not losing more ground. I'd hold 10ppm until testing advised otherwise. (Using a submersible and not the pool pump)

Or.

Keep some FC in there until it's full. It's up.to you.

well I mean first test, I usually test before adding CYA. but yeah I'm sure there is 0 CYA in there. adding chlorine and testing once it was full last time worked well so I think I'll do that.
