Please help ALGAE problem**PICS**

I recently purchased a new home(foreclosure) with a marcite pool and spa. The pool has been neglected for about 3 or 4 months and a bunch of algae has accumulated. The bank paid for a pool guy to come out, fix the pump motor and clean the pool.

The pool guy drained the pool, removed all algae, bleached the stains and pressure washed. Unfortunately, the pool still has bad black and gray stains all over the bottom. He claims an acid wash might be an option besides re-painting the bottom.

Since the pool is screened in, there was no organic debris such as leaves and the stains were all caused by the algae growth.

Any advice???

It is a plaster pool. Don't paint it!

How old is the finish?

Is it still smooth or like medium/rough grit sandpaper?

Try a wire brush and some elbow grease and keep the chlorine elevated some, 15-20% of the CYA level. It should fade over time.

Not really. That is a severely damaged pool (look at the copper staining). The pool guy really didn't have a chance of making that look real good. Even if the staining (algae) does bleach out, the green tint from the copper will remain. That is a pool that needs a re-plaster.

If it's copper, Bruce is probably right but it might just be the remaining stain buried deep.

If my earlier solution doesn't get it, then a little acid down a pipe over the stain will tell pretty quickly.

Thanks for the responses. These pics were taken one day after the algae was removed. I will try an elevated level of chlorine(15-20ppm) with a daily wire brush scrub. I'm hoping with an overchlorinated pool the algae stains will fade over time. Any other suggestions for chemical additives to treat algae stains? As for other stains (copper) what is the best treatement for this?

best treatment? how is the surface, rough or smooth?

likely a re-plaster is needed, drain, chip out, bonding coat, plaster, refill and chemical balancing

if your area is anything like s.florida, you're looking at 2k in costs.

And if your anything like Southern California, your looking at about $4,000.00 for white plaster only. Color, or "better" finishes, would be more.
