pH level

I have a 40,000 gallon pool. I also own the Taylor K 2005. Yesterday I did the testing, assessed it was an 8.0 pH per the color. Plugged in the alkalinity at 140 after using the Taylor. It recommended i add a gallon and three cups of muriatric acid 31.45% to lower pH to 7.2. I added a gallon. Today, about 20 hours later. Pump running 100% of the time. Skimmers emptied. I do the test. Alkalinity is 125. pH still the same. Even same number of drops, 4 drops until color changed from red to yellowish. What can be going?

What is happening is perfectly normal. Your high TA is raising your pH. Reduce the pH again down to 7.2. It will go up again, and your TA will come down some more. Once your TA goes below 100 the pH rises will start to slow down.

I am adding another gallon of muriatric acid 31.45% today. I added a lot of chlorine in the morning figuring that pH level would be lower. I am waiting 4 hours before adding the acid. Is that chlorine considered a loss?
