No idea. I typically have to buy it in 25# boxes and I get it from a local pool supplier.

It should be heat treated (calcined) DE for pools. There are different grades of DE not all of which are suitable for pools.

Yeah that's a good deal. However, you're only going to use AT MOST two cups of the DE so that box will likely outlive the pool or filter ;)

Keep at it. The fine particulate clear out phase can take a long time and can get discouraging. You'll get there!! You're doing all the right things.

Yeah def discouraging ha. I've got the DE media in there. My CC has been .5 for a couple days. My FC at 8:40 last night was 14. My FC this morning at 7:10 was 11..5. So night time loss was not too bad.

Also when I back washed this morning I put a pantyhose in front of my return jet before starting the pump and caught about a half a cup of sand. That's what I'm feeling on the pool bottom when vacuuming.

Ok. So since you did not pass OCLT, you still need to SLAM. CCs are encouraging.

Let me ask you something - have you opened your sand filter lately and given it a deep clean? Specifically, have you inspected the laterals and all the various gaskets for damage?

I am totally NOT a sand filter user, so my experience here is limited. I know people will often do the backwash then rinse cycle several times to avoid sand. Is that what you do?

Problem with that is a SLAM is really supposed to have all pumps running. You can let the fine particulates settle but I bet the minute you turn on the pump and start moving a vacuum in the water then everything will get disturbed and mixed.

You can try that to see if it works but it will definitely mean spending more time in the SLAM process.

Usually you backwash at 25% over clean pressure. When you added the DE, did you make note of the new clean pressure with DE? If you drop below that new pressure after backwash, then I'd say you need to add a little more DE.

Yes I did. It was around 13%. I add about a 1/4 cup after each back wash. Now it's 14%. So u guess I don't need to add any more still it gets back to 13%. My return pressure is still strong at 14%. So I guess that extra DE should help filter.

That sounds right, you added DE to increase the pressure about 2psi. That should help.

Suspended fine particulates are the biggest pain in this process. There's no quick way to deal with it. TFP doesn't recommend the use of any flocculants because they tend to cause more trouble than they worth.

Keep the filtration going.
