We have had an inground fiberglass pool for the last 9 years with no issues. This year, we had a hard time keeping the alkalinity and PH up. After numerous trips to the pool store to test and add checmicals, suddenly we were shocked to see a gritty purple residue all over the pool. It feels like sandpaper and while some of it will brush off and vacuum up, it settles again. The water line had a much more difficult to remove ring. The pool store indicated our CYA was WAY high (unsure how) and we use a copper ionizing system which has always been set low. When we backwashed the filter, a lovely lavender colour could come out and it has stained the stones as well!
I understand from other posts in this page that it is likely due to CYA and Copper. I need to know if there is a way to a) get rid of (we will drain most of the pool for closing it) and b) to stop it from coming back. Should we be using a metal remover on a regular basis? We haven’t done anything different this year (before this all happened of course). We put a chlorine puck in the skimmer when it is going to have heavier use but otherwise, the ionizer does a good job of keeping it regulated. I have also replaced the copper prongs thinking that may have been an issue but…..
I’m just completely baffled and hoping the pool is not permanently damaged. Any suggestions to remove the grit and what to look for in the future is appreciated.
