Pentair SunTouch with IntelliFlo3 VSF

Current Setup:
I have a 10 year old in-ground pool with a Pentair SunTouch controller connected to a two speed Whisperflo pump. I do not have solar/heating, only a QuickTouch II Wireless Remote (connected to the COM port), a valve actuator for a waterfall feature, and a pool light. (no spa, no salt cell)

New Setup:
I am replacing the pump with an IntelliFlo3 VSF (011075), and want to make sure I wire it properly so it has constant power, as well as figure out the best way to program the pump.

See attached PDF for current wiring diagram. If I’m understanding it correctly, it looks like the pump relay has the line & load sides swapped. I’m not sure if it matters, because the system has been working for 10 years.

I will not need the 2-Speed relay any more. Will I even need the Pump Relay if there is nothing for it to switch on? For example, could I just take one of the 120v lines, and connect it to the transformer and one of the pump wires using a wire nut? Then do the same for the second 120v line/transformer line/pump wire? Or should I have 3 wires per Line terminal on the pump relay (nothing on the Load terminals)?

Also, should I try to program the pump speeds in the SunTouch? If so, I will need to use the same COM port that currently has the 4 wires for the QuickTouch. I’m not sure if it would cause any issues adding the two wires from the pump. The QuickTouch currently controls pump high, pool light, waterfall valve, and pump low. If I don’t use the SunTouch to control the pump speeds the remote would only be useful for the light and waterfall valve. I assume I could use the app on my phone to change the pump speed (higher for waterfall). It would probably be ideal to program it on the SunTouch to maintain functionality of the remote. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
-Chris

Welcome to TFP.

Last I heard in June the IntelliFlo3 pump is not compatible with the SolarTouch controller until Pentair releases a firmware update for the pump. I don't know what the situation is with the SunTouch.

Check with Pentair before you commit to the Intelliflo3 with your SunTouch controller.

Keep us informed of what you learn.

Electricity does not know the difference. It just confuses the next guy.

Do you have a SWG?

How do you chlorinate your pool?

A SWG should be connected through the filter/pump relay so it is only powered when the pump is on.

For example, could I just take one of the 120v lines, and connect it to the transformer and one of the pump wires using a wire nut? Then do the same for the second 120v line/transformer line/pump wire? Or should I have 3 wires per Line terminal on the pump relay (nothing on the Load terminals)?

Does not matter except you should not have more then 2 wires under a screw. Using a screw for a connection block for 3 wires is not good electrical practice.

Is your pump CB GFCI? Current NEC code requires a GFCI CB for pumps and lights.

Do you want to lose your pump due to a GFCI trip caused by a light problem?

I would power your pump and lights with separate GFCI CBs.

Also, should I try to program the pump speeds in the SunTouch? If so, I will need to use the same COM port that currently has the 4 wires for the QuickTouch. I’m not sure if it would cause any issues adding the two wires from the pump.

COM ports can have two wires under each screw.

See what Pentair says about how the SunTouch works with the Intelliflo3 pump.

I called Pentair, and it is not compatible with the SunTouch. I already have the pump, so I will need to control it via the app.

See what Pentair says about how the SunTouch works with the Intelliflo3 pump.
My pool is chlorinated with chlorine tablets.
My light goes to a separate breaker in my main electrical panel. It ties to a GFCI outlet next to the SunTouch.
My pump does not appear to be GFCI protected, as it goes to a normal breaker in my main electrical panel. It sounds like I should replace my two pole breaker with a Siemens QF220A.
I have confirmed with Pentair that the pump is not compatible with the SunTouch, so I just need to tie into power and use the app to schedule the pump.
