Pentair Quad DE - what is this thing?

I've had a Pentair Quad DE in a box in my basement for years, waiting to install it. The time has come.

I opened it up, and this was sitting in the bottom of the filter:



It looks like a filter/screen of some sort and the black part is rubber--it's flexible. It's also got threads on it. I don't see anything for it to thread onto.

It's also not on this parts schematic that I see.

All this makes me think it doesn't belong in the filter...and thinking like that usually gets me into trouble.

Anyone recognize this thing and can tell me where it goes?

It's the air bleed screen.

Huh. There's another part in there that I thought was that thing. There's only a white PVC tube that the screen cap would sit on--there's no threaded fitting. Should I have a threaded fitting on top of that PVC tube?

Its a press fit. It should go under the manifold.
