Just a quick survey from the experts:

We have an 18K gallon salt water pool being put in. I had specified an Pentair MasterTemp 400,000 BTU HD Heater - ASME for the heater but the PB brought the non ASME version. I can still get the ASME version or get a $300 credit on the price difference.

My question is for a salt water pool in CA would I see any benefits by going ASME (also considering future repair cost/time) vs. NON-ASME (in other words if I went non-ASME am I short changing myself in the long term for the short term benefit of credit). TIA.

p.s. Apologies if this is the wrong sub-forum. I did not see one dedicated to heating equipment.

If you paid extra for it you should get the credit, or the upgraded HX. No question. That's just business, but as for performance, and longevity, you'll likely not see the difference with proper water balance, salt or not. That said, I think 300 on a pool build is nothing to add a little robust-ness to your heater package, and you sound like you wanted that. Reading between the lines, I think you'll be happier, and have more peace of mind going with your original decision. Tell him to send it back, and put in the upgrade version.

Thanks everyone for the information and the advice. He was able to locate one locally in LA (otherwise had to get one delivered from SD) so we installed the ASME version. It might not make any difference in the long term but I got to believe if something is built to run continuously it probably has slightly better components then the residential version (at least that is what I am telling myself :D) to allow for the higher MTBF. Almost done with this build and feeling excited. Equipment is going in - plaster, pebble bottom and then startup and we can swim!
