Pentair Intellitouch relay ON/OFF chatter

The low voltage relay to control the pump doesn't want to stay engaged. It'll chatter repeatedly then finally holds but only for a few minutes then starts in with the chatter....on/off/on/off/on/off every second or so. So I REPLACED the relay with a new one and it still chatters. Anyone have an idea what might cause this?

Ken,

Are you talking about one of the small relays on the main board of the EasyTouch, or are you talking about one of the High Voltage relays that are mounted below the Button/Display panel?

If the relay has the same problem after replacement, it is most likely the IC chip that drives the relay..

What kind of pump do you have? A single speed, 2-speed, or Variable Speed pump? Are we talking about the main pool pump or some kind of booster pump?

Was it working just fine one day then went bad the next day, or did you do some kind of maintenance or reprogramming on the EasyTouch, just before it went bad??

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim R.
It's one of the Omron relays mounted below the button/display panel.

Its the one on the left which drives the main pool pump. It drives a 3 hp variable speed pump

Nothing changed as far as reprogramming, etc.

Is there a way to do a system reset to see if that solves the problem?

Yes, I will read the manual too! :)

Ken,

The high voltage relay on the top left is called the Pump/Filter relay.. It closes at the same time the pump is running, but is not used to power an IntelliFlo pump.. Do you have a salt cell??

If the relay is not being used for anything, you can just leave it unplugged.

Something is making the relay chatter, which suggests that the 24 VDC coil voltage is "chattering"... Either the driver chip that controls the relay is bad or something else in the EasyTouch is telling the relay to turn on and off quickly.. This is exactly what happens when the system controls a color LED light.. That is why I asked about reprogramming..

Not sure it will do any good, but the Reset button on the main panel does the same thing as rebooting a PC.. You can try that.

I'd want to know if other relays chatter when you turn them on .. Push an unused Aux button on.. You should see the Aux light go on and hear the relay "clunk" and not chatter.

Thanks,

Jim R.

OK....I think I found the problem. Both my wife and I have the Pentair app on our Android phones. Our new pool guy has an iPhone so he put the iPhone version on his phone. Seeing how much better the iPhone app is compared to the Android version we bought a used iPhone and installed the app on it. Thinking about when this problem happened, my wife and I uninstalled the Android app on our phones. So it appears (fingers crossed here) there was some conflicting scheduling inputs between the apps. So far the Intellitouch panel seems to be behaving. Hoping this is the fix.

Ken,

The Pump/Filter relay is not supposed to control the IntelliFlo pump.. The IntelliFlo is supposed to get constant AC power.-

Show us a pic of the relays, breakers and wiring.

When the pump turns on and off, tell me what happens at the pump's display.. Does the display go blank or not?? When the pump is working correctly the display should say "Display not active".. When it starts to chatter, does the display still say "Display not active" or does it change with the chatter?

Thanks,

Jim R.
