Pentair Easytouch with IC60 - ON/OFF

Hello all!

I just finished converting my pool to salt! Very excited.

I have everything operating but my Pentair IC60 does not turn off with the pump. My pumps are variable speed so constantly powered. I wired my SWG to the same connections (always hot). I had hoped/expected the Easytouch automation would be able to turn off the SWG when the pumps were commanded off. I have established COM with the external power supply and it's reading salt levels, etc.

Am I correct that the automation on its own cannot control on/off with the SWG through COMM? I plan to purchase a current sensing relay to work through this just surprised the automation can't switch on/off. I do not have a spare onboard relay to use for this task.

Also - any issues with relay switching a single pole of a 220v SWG? I can fully disconnect for service reasons just verifying no electrical harm to the SWG by switching a single leg of 120V for purposes of normal on/off operation.

Thanks for the fast reply! I have 4 onboard relays using heater, air blower, spa light, and pool light. My pumps are hard wired back to the breaker. I don't necessarily like how the PB did it but the normal filter pump relay is the Heater.

But on those lines I rarely use my lights independently and could land them on a single relay to free one relay up. I suppose I could use the additional relay for the SWG?

Ok, I'll go that route. Actually that's how I initially started before I noticed the pump relay load side was unpowered then traced it to the heater. Sounds like I'll be re-wiring all 4 relays to make that happen but this was bothering me anyway. I'm not sure why they did it this way. 🤷

Smitty,

Sorry, but your pool builder is an idiot..

The instruction say that your IC60 MUST be wired to the load side of your Pump/Filter relay..

I see no reason to rewire all the relays..

Show us some pics of your current wiring and the back of the EasyTouch Circuit card.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hey Jim,

I actually laughed at that one! Yes, they did a good job but recall them spending a lot of time wiring my automation - might have been training day.

I looked at the wiring again this morning with a clear head and realized what they did. They wired the 2nd relay (aux 1) as you would if it was the filter pump relay. Then, they switched the J8 (filter pump) with J9 (aux 1) connectors on the low voltage side, effectively making the aux 1 relay into filter pump relay. This is why I wasn't getting voltage on my pump relay but noticed I had voltage on aux 1 when the pump was enabled.

So, I just moved my SWG over to aux 1 that is operating as pump filter relay and now it cycles with the pump. I have no idea why they would flip J8 and J9...but at least the SWG cycles on/off correctly now.

Regarding the heater - It is on a relay and has been working for a couple years. Is there any reason to move it off a relay and tie it directly into a breaker for constant power? Or ok to leave it as-is and have a cocktail instead?

They wired the 2nd relay (aux 1) as you would if it was the filter pump relay.

Smitty,

Just kind of confirms my original diagnoses of your pool builder..

While it is true that any relay could be used as the Pump/Filter relay, it is kind of like randomly assigning house address numbers, in no particular order.. How is the poor mailman supposed to know who lives where... Sigh!!!

It is what it is, and there is no requirement that you need to rewire anything as long as "a" relay is being used as the Pump/Filter relay..

I assume that the current heater relay is controlling the AC (120 or 240 VAC) going to your heater.. It is really unnecessary, but it will not hurt anything.

Normally the heater gets constant AC power and the EasyTouch tells the heater to run or not via the 2-pin heater connection, which controls the heater's 24 VAC to turn the heater on and off.. In your set up, what turns the current heater relay on and off..??? Do you control the heater's temperature via the heater itself or through the EasyTouch?

Thanks,

Jim R.

The heater is also landed on the Aux 1 relay (which now operates as filter pump relay). Originally thought it was landed on filter pump but that was the air blower. My eyes must have crossed when walking the conduit at 10oclock last night. Maybe if they had just wired it up per the drawings/IOM this would have been done in 2 minutes...

The 2-pin heater connection is present and I am able to make temperature changes from the Easytouch so that seems to be one of the few items landed in the right spot.

Thanks!

We have to be here to help you. You never know when you'll just up and. I dunno. Install a SWG. :ROFLMAO:

So you extended the date the lights go out, ensuring we'll be here to help until then.

And THANKS. We're all volunteer here, but we like our hobby and don't want to have to find a new one. Change is bad.
