Hello, about a 3 months ago my Aqua Rite stopped working. I was going to replace the round black thermistor like everyone has done and a friend suggest just clamping the thermistor with one of the small black paper binders and it would start working again and sure enough it has started working again. Please help, how has this made it start generating again and what am I going to damage by doing this. I am no expert.

The part cost $2.50 and the repair takes about 15 min. When I replaced mine I just cut the legs of the old one and soldered the new one to them at a 90 degree angle standing away from the board. It's easier to do and allows for better cooling.

The thermistor protects the electronics and transformer from excessive inrush current.

Inrush current depends on what part of the sine wave the ac voltage is in when power is turned on.

If the voltage is zero, the inrush current can be very high and overload the electrical components.

The thermistor provides a temporary resistance to control inrush current.

Basically, it acts as a surge protector.

You really should use the correct part.

I figured once I put the cover back on its safe enough. There are several places you shouldn't stick your fingers into while power is on..

The metal of the clip is short circuiting the part.... you are playing with fire and may further damage your equipment.

As already mentioned multiple times, fix the unit correctly. If another high inrush current situation should arise you will damage downstream components in the curcuit, or possibly start a fire.
