Painted pool advice/experience

I just finished painting my pool with Dyco pool paint from local home depot. It's been drying for about 1week now. Will start fill this weekend. It looks better than it did before but after close inspection yesterday of the finish. Paint looks pretty flimsy. Fingers cross, hope I can get a solid 1-2 seasons out of it. Any advice on what I can do chemical wise so it won't be so harsh on the paint and break it down? Any experience from other dyco paint user? I attached a before and after pix. this will be a temp fix till i can save up for replaster…..also, if someone can please explain why the pool looks the way it did before paint? why was it so discolored, was it plaster failure or?Any comments greatly appreciated

Most pool paint is water based.

Hmmmm...what can go wrong with putting a water based paint under water?

Pool paint will usually begin to break down almost immediately.

I tried doing a makeover on a budget without a lot of research first, which I should of done. no going back now, but I hope im not a statistic of "you get what you paid for". i'll let everyone know after filling and time goes by.

Getting 2 seasons out of the pool paint should be ok. The problem is it will be breaking down and can get messy by either getting sticky or flaking off.

Was the plaster rough and were the stained surfaces raised and rough? Or was the plaster eaten away? What kind of test results do you have or remember? Was pH and TA mostly high? Or mostly low? If it mostly ran high then it could be calcium scaling. If it mostly ran low then it could be etching where the plaster is dissolving into the water.

Calcium scale can be remediated with water balance and managing ypur CSI. Scale isnt really a problem for the life of the plaster except that it is rough and unsightly. Etching is a catastrophic failure requiring remastering.

what I think is the plaster, is smooth, even and not raised on the walls and floor, BUT on the edge right under the tile, is VERY VERY rough. when I was acid washing, I think the acid was eating away at the plaster? im not too sure. not a very good pix, but here's 1

Acid will not eat up plaster but, it will dissolve calcium scale. And calcium scale is typically rough. It seems likely to me that there was calcium scale build up in the pool due to not maintaining pH and TA, letting it go too high. The good news if it is calcium scale is that your pool does not need to be replastered. The bad news is that there is paint on it.

Calcium scale can be removed from the pool by lowering your CSI to -0.8 to -0.6 and brushing with a metal brush as often as you feel like it. That will slowly dissolve the calcium back into the water. You can also use wet/dry sandpaper to sand down rough spots.

I already painted the pool but i'll take a better pix of the rough area to get an ideal if there's underlying damage.

There are some decent paints out there but they are 2 part systems. Single stage is a temporary fix. Hope you get 2 seasons out of it. The old sayings are still around for a reason
