Owner-Build - the fun has begun!

Clermont
The sod was stripped on Monday and I pulled out the irrigation lines last night. I will cap the lines for now and reroute them once the heavy excavation is completed. Hoping to have the dig completed by the end of next week pending out summer showers here in Orlando. Getting permits took about 3 weeks as the city of Clermont does not provide very much guidance as to what is needed. It was a bit aggravating but I learned a lot along the way. I will post updates with pics to this thread.

Welcome to TFP TheEpster!

You best ensure your subs and/or you are present when the inspectors come around. You will achieve nearly 100% fail if not. This is true with a licensed contractor and almost a guarantee with an owner contractor.

Pictures are the surest way to gain traction on your posts :D. TFP'ers will come out of the woodwork typically.

Undertaking a self build is a big undertaking and the help level available here is unmatched.

Thank you for the tips!! They were pretty tough on me at the building services division but I made it through it and was able to get the permits approved! I was thinking "man, if it is this tough all ready, I better up my protein intake in preparation of the battle ahead!"

Pool Dimensions are 37ftx15ft. 3.5 deep on one end, 3 feet deep on the other, and 5 feet in the middle. I want this to be a pool that is very conducive to sports like volleyball, marco polo, laps, hoops, etc. Spa is raised at 6ft x 8 ft. I plan to widen the spill way to create more water noise.

Nice design!
There is a lot of discussion about a 3ft depth, most people feel it is too shallow and suggest 3.5ft or 4 for the shallow end. Hold up a tape measure to yourself and see where it hits. I have a sport depth pool starting at 3.5ft deep. I'm short and I like the 3.5 depth.

Nice build and I would give the 3' depth more thought...

What state are you in?

Thank you.
I am in Central Florida.
I have 3.5ft on one end, 3ft on the other, and 5ft in the middle. I have a 3 year old, an 18 month old, and one due in December of this year. I was thinking that I have 13.5 years till my youngest one will be a teenager so the kids will get more use out of the 3ft area. I may increase it to 3.5ft now that I am getting those recommendations.

Good to see you are considering going to 3.5'! With that FL heat you will be glad you did. Remember folks on here can recommend anything but at the end of the day its your pool for your family. We started out thinking 3.5' and ended up with 4' on each end and 5.5' in the middle and really like it. I will say the first few times in the pool we thought it was just a tad deeper than we needed but after swimming and playing for just over a month we now know we made the right choice. I find that kids and teenagers like to swim and head under water where as us older adults like to swim, float and walk in the pool.

We didn't do a spa but have two ledges (one on each end) with different depths for the kids (2 1/2 and 3 1/2) to play on. As they are getting more comfortable and use to wearing goggles they hardly even play on the ledges and love swimming under water more than anything which means we spend a lot of time under water with them. With that being said 3' would have been super shallow and 4' has worked so well for us.

Best of luck to you making your decision....

Told you the pictures (renderings) would help gain traction and attention. :p

I might agree with the minimum of 3.5'. Remember, when the kids are under this height they will be wearing some type of floating device until they become proficient swimmers. They can "rest" on the steps and swim out and back.

Yes, getting the permits as a self builder is a chore! I'll bet they ran you through the ringer several times!

You were right! I will post updated pics once the process begins.
If the weather holds up they will stake it out and start digging this week!
