I have a fiberglass pool that was installed without an overflow tube. Can I add one off the back of skimmer?

Luckily I can gain access because the decking edge is only a foot from skimmer box.

If so, is there specific plumbing material sole for this?

Welcome to TFP! Yes, you can add one. Schedule 40 PVC should do the trick. Doesn't have to be a large line like your plumbing. I would think 1/2"-1" should be plenty with an appropriate fitting into the skimmer. The biggest issue to watch for is to ensure there is enough down-slope to carry that overflow water away. I wish I would've had one done. I can get to my skimmer as well, but it would be difficult to find a good location for the water to run by gravity to given the slope and design of my yard.
