Opening my pool and want to do it real nice this time

Nice!! When you get done filling, let the pump run about 30 minutes or so to mix the water up good. Or go for a swim 😀

Recheck the chlorine and PH after that so you know where you are and then you can adjust if needed.

You’re doing great Monte and I really love that liner.

By the time i finish filling the pool it will be almost time for the pump to go on with the timer anyway. Shouldn’t i test the CYA after filling so that i can then add the new calculated amount of chlorine?

Yes. Let the water circulate a bit so it mixes up and then retest CYA, PH and chlorine. Let us know what you get.

You’re welcome Monte. I think I can say that for everyone that’s weighed in on this thread.

You’ve had some fantastic folks including Newdude and Mdragger offering their knowledge and advice. We’re all so very fortunate to have this forum. I know I have been and can’t ever say thanks enough to all the good people here. I learn something new every day and it’s a joy to be able to share just a tiny bit to help someone else.

Your determination, tenacity and willingness to work at it is amazing. You’ve put a lot of thought, time and effort into doing this. It’s paying off and soon it will be a job very well done indeed.

That is how I test all my tests - I dunk a Pyrex 16-ounce cup with a handle into the pool and use that water as my testing water instead of directly in the pool.
If it is glass replace it with something plastic. Glass near the pool is a no no.
It is nearly impossible to get all the broken glass pieces out of the pool if something shatters/breaks because you can’t see them.

I get you-- I will but for now this thing weighs like 3 lbs- it is a really thick piece of Pyrex glass

He swiped Mrs. Monte’s measuring cup. 🤣 Do be careful with it though. Pyrex is tough but it can break.

I use a red solo cup. Had to take a sharpie and mark it “pool water only” though. The tequila was flowing very quickly one evening 🤣

Yes, BUt I want something with measurements on it like this one has.

You can get a plastic one at Walmart or Target for about $8. Amazon has them too but they’re a couple bucks more.

So now tonight before i add chlorine i should test my CYA first anf then calculate the proper amount of chlorine based on pool math. So for example if my CYA is 80 and i want a target fc of at minimum of 11 then i need to add 42 oz of chlorine?(if mu chlorine is down to 8 due to heavy sun today)

Follow the
FC/CYA Levels.
Put in the “target” what you think will get you through without falling to minimum before your next dose.
Poolmath will tell you exactly how much that is

One thing to consider, in hindsight.

with all the times you have backwashed and vacuumed to waste, you probaby could have just done a no drain-water exchange and been done with it.

the partial drain and refills you have been doing dilute the fresh water immensely.

Let mw ask u guys this The pool is starting to look aqua again because as the member above stated my water is getting immensely diluted. So i think the chorine is being heavily reduced and the clear color i had a day ago is gone. To counteract that can i just put in a higher target number for fc and bring it back up to a good sanitizing level to get it clear again?

Draining and filling is bringing down the chlorine just like it does the CYA. Essentially, you’re watering down the whiskey.

I wouldn’t worry about the color right now. You’re doing a lot so it’s going to look a little different. If the chlorine is low, it hasn’t been long enough to hurt anything and we can fix it quick enough. If you are worried though, 32 ounces should give you a little over 2ppm. That won’t hurt anything.

Keep filling and when you get enough water in there to start the pump, cut it on so it can start mixing water for you. Move the hose around to another spot and maybe brush a bit. Remember how you did 3 laps for luck dragging the brush? That will help mix.

Test CYA, chlorine and PH about 30 minutes after you’re done filling. You want to make sure all the water is mixed up well.
