Hey all, so sorry I am creating another thread but I am on call at the hospital and cannot address this directly so need to give my wife clear instructions. I am slammed (no pun intended) so dont have time to look up all the threads on this so any advice would be amazing.

Neightborhood girl pooped (solid) in our pool today (and apparently did yesterday even though I wasnt told of this). Fiberglass inground, SWG IC-40, cartridge filter, separate tanning ledge that fills from the pool. FC this am was 3.5 per wife, CYA 60. Pool temp 87, outdoor temp 100 so desperate to swim. I did read the FC/CYA chart and assume I need to SLMA. I asked my pool builder given this was a recent install (not a good start) and he said a FC of 7 (said it would need 3 lbs of shock). I dont think he uses CYA though. Also we are leaving town tomorrow am, awesome right? Neighbor can handle some of this hopefully.

-Got everyone out
-Got brown out
-Showers for all, will disinfect toys
-Running pump full
-Will clean filter when i get home
-Lower pH to 7.2ish
-Do we really raise the FC to 24? How long will this take to go down to swimmable levels?


-Assume all this may be overkill given little kids are petri dishes and theres probably ample feces in all pools anyways.

With a CYA of 60, 3.5 is already only barely above the minimum. Raising it to 7 won't do anything for the sanitation of the water. You need to source some liquid chlorine and bring it up to 24. You can swim in any FC amount up to and including SLAM.

The CDC itself does differentiate between "formed fecal matter" in the pool and a "diarrheal incident". Being that you're dealing with the former rater than the latter, bringing it up to SLAM and letting it fall back down should be sufficient given their guidelines.

Raise it to SLAM just to feel better. Let the FC fall on its own. Swimming is safe the whole time.

No idea if your neighbor can test with Taylor Kit bit of not & since leaving today…just be prepared to do a SLAM once back if you need it.
