Hi,

I just bought a house with a 16x32 in ground pool that has a Hayward super pump 700 and a DE filter that I can’t backwash. Over the last couple days I’ve been going through the painstaking process of running the pump, shutting it off, opening the filter, spraying it out, putting it all back together, and turning it back on to let it run. This morning, I went out to check the pool’s progress, and saw a distinct water line inside the pump basket, which I know is not a good thing. I turned the system off, opened the pump lid and found an o ring inside the pump basket. I took it out, shut the lid, turned the pump on and hoped I’d see a leak somewhere on the suction side. I didn’t, but my pump started making a noise that sounded like a dog whistle. I’m hoping this is because of air in the line and not because the bearings are failing. My question for the hive mind is, is there anything about this setup on the suction side where there would obviously be an o ring like the one pictured? My pump tank’s gasket is not a o ring like this and it is definitely in place, so I am sure it is not from there. Just hoping to get pointed in the right direction before I go disconnecting plumbing.

Thank you!

Welcome to TFP! Your 3-way valve will have a couple O-rings (large & small), and the unions as well, but those should be secured in place. No way those would just fly-out on their own. Do you have any other products in the pool like a cleaner or something that might have lost it?

Now there is a pump diffuser gasket about that size I believe. See the illustration below. It shouldn't just fall out either, especially with suction as the motor s running, but you could always check.

Thanks for the quick response and the diagram! I believe the gasket you’re referring to is part 11? I’ll see if I can locate that on the pump! It looks like it should be a little thicker than the one I found in my pump basket, so hopefully that wasn’t a shoddy replacement on somebody’s part that flew out.

The previous owner did have a Hayward robot vacuum, which i have in the garage. I have not ran it personally or even looked at it, but I think he used it a lot!

Thanks for all the responses! The o ring I am seeing as I dig into this float valve possibility looks exactly like the one that showed up in the pump basket, and it seems to have the most likely chance of making it into the pump basket. I’ll check it out this afternoon!

Unfortunately, I don’t think this has anything to do with the whistling sound my pump is making, so I’m afraid I might be having bearing troubles in addition to this o-ring going rogue :(

Update to the mysterious o ring:

My skimmer does not have a float valve in it, so the case of the mysterious o ring is being reopened.

Any other ideas?

Here is a photo of it on the elbow of a 1 1/2 in pvc pipe for scale.
