Noob Mistake- Added Calcium Hypo to salt pool

Hey all,

I think I just made a total noob mistake. I wanted to shock my pool before some construction took place, so I used granular calcium hypo to shock the water. Now after a couple of days with the filtration system turned off (still under construction), there is a thin layer of white, slightly transparent precipitate at the bottom of the pool.

To me, this doesn't look like organic matter, but it looks like some sort of mineral. Does anybody know the chemistry behind this? What sort of mineral could form by adding calcium hypo to a salt water pool?

FC- 8.5 (elevated while spa under construction)
CC- <0.2
TA- 70
NaCl- 3000
pH- 7.6

Cal hypo will only add chlorine and calcium hardness to the water. If you brush the precipitate around does it dissolve into the water? Since your Calcium Hardness isn’t too high, I would guess it’s likely just cal hypo that isn’t fully dissolved that you’re seeing.

A little cal hypo shouldn’t cause any harm at your levels; frequent use though can lead to CH levels being too high.

You do want to get it dissolved though, so it’s not sitting on your pool surface.

I find cal hypo takes so long to dissolve. I pre-dissolve it in a bucket of pool water first. It takes several minutes of agitation until the granules are gone (i just use a stick). Without that, it just sits on my pool surface, which isn't good.

Never never never never add water to cal hypo. Add cal hypo to water. The order matters!

You'll be fine. I was using Cal-Hypo for a while and would always get powdery deposits and milky cloudiness in the water after adding it. Just brush it around til it dissolves and swap over to liquid chlorine in the future. You might need to do a little bit of muriatic acid dosing to clear the water back up fully, but it's all good.

I added calcium hypo to my pool and my salt pool system just went berserk. It was running the chlorine cell for 60% of the time. Now I shut it off. Please tell me how to fix this problem.
